A trim command (known as TRIM in the ATA command set, and UNMAP in the SCSI command set) allows an operating system to inform a solid-state drive (SSD) which blocks of data are no longer considered in use and can be wiped internally.[1] ... Trimming enables the SSD to more efficiently handle garbage collection, which would otherwise slow future write operations to the involved blocks.[3] ... Enabling unsupported filesystems. Where the filesystem does not automatically support TRIM, some utilities can send trimming commands manually. Usually they determine which blocks are free and then pass this list as a series of trimming commands to the drive. These utilities are available from various manufacturers (e.g. Intel,[60] G.Skill[61]), or as general utilities (e.g. Linux's hdparm "wiper" since v9.17,[62][63] or mdtrim, as mentioned above). Both hdparm and mdtrim finds free blocks by allocating a large file on the filesystem and resolving what physical location it was assigned to. On any operating system, the drive can detect when the computer writes all-zeros to a block, and de-allocate (trim) that block instead of recording a block of zeros. ..." Can Windows XP Pro x86 *Safely* TRIM an SSD?: https://msfn.org/board/topic/173482-can-windows- xp-pro-x86-safely-trim-an-ssd/ Citat: "... Windows XP is a great OS for SSDs provided that you disable defrag and have a TRIM and SSD optimizer program with you. ... XP can't TRIM by itself, however we can manually TRIM SSDs under XP from some applications bundled with SSDs (provided the hardware ain't too ancient). I've tested the TRIM button in Corsair SSD Toolbox, OCZ Toolbox, and Samsung Magician under XP with success and no explosions. Extra touches to help SSD life under XP: - XP can't align partitions correctly for SSDs, so better partition and format in advance in another comp with Windows 7, then install XP. - Disable prefetch. - Disable indexing. - Disable hibernation. - Disable scheduled defrag. - Disable pagefile, or move it to an HDD or a ramdisk. - Let the system idle logged-off for an hour or more from time to time, so garbage collection can work. ... Beware some SSD makers like Crucial don't bundle a software tool for manually TRIMming, make sure the SSD brand and model you get for XP/Vista comes with such a tool. ... The 'Pro' version of SSD Tweaker can manually TRIM many brands of SSD. ..." Anyone Know of TRIMing Software for Windows XP?: https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=68421 How to enable TRIM in Windows XP?: https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/549371/How+t o+enable+TRIM+in+Windows+XP ---------- Glenn, OZ1HFT |
